about

In October 1989 Conrad Schnitzler called to say that he was coming to New York City to see the Generator where I had been conducting his Cassette Concerts. Conrad had stopped performing in 1979 and hadn’t left Berlin in ten years; some considered him a recluse. I asked him if I could schedule a date at Generator for him to “do something.” He said, “Yes.”

I put a notice in the Village Voice that Conrad Schnitzler would be at Generator. The night of his appearance, the first person enthusiastically showed up at 6pm. Conrad immediately offered the guy a beer and started telling stories and answering questions. Slowly more people entered the gallery. Conrad introduced himself and spoke with them, telling stories and casually socializing.

Around 8pm the gallery was filled with people. He would invite people to go around the corner, grab a beer and come back. Occasionally someone would ask him, “When are you going to perform?” Conrad would pick up a conductor’s baton and point to a sign on the wall that read “NOW PLAYING”. He would then go right back to laughing, talking, telling stories and answering questions. This continued throughout the evening as people left and new people arrived. By 10pm people stopped asking, “When?” and just hung out at the gallery, talking with Conrad.

At exactly midnight, Conrad sat in a chair, wrapped a black scarf over his mouth and rolled a cigarette in silence. He didn’t speak anymore. Eventually the gallery emptied out. The recordings playing in the octophonic system at Sediment Arts are the six hours of ambient recordings I made while Conrad Schnitzler was at Generator on that night in October 1989.
